Hi,

Just wanted to ask what Virtual Drums are you using? Is it EZDrummer, Addictive Drums, Superior Drummer, or maybe something else?

How you mix them? I mean when you multitrack it. Which Vsti plug-ins are you using for each drum? Maybe you can give some tips, which will help to get a better sound. Smile confused

Well my friend I see you've got a bunch of questions there hehe xD
I was gonna upload an article to the site I can say that you've got me

But it's no harm to give you a quick reply here also. Wink

I've used BDF2, EZ drummer, Superior Drummer and Addictive Drums.

Some quick impressions:

* BFD2 (with EvilDrums Expansion pack):
Great sound. real sound. It takes too much Hard Disk space for the full installation (all velocities) but trust me it is worth it.
You need some time to tweak them to get the sound you need.

* EZdrummer/Superior Drummer:
Superior Drummer is like the... "son" of EZdrummer. Superior Drummer is just... superior to EZdrummer. I really like the drums of SD with "metal foundry" expansion. The sounds are more processed and need less tweaking.

* Addictive Drums: AD was the first VSTi module I used. I really liked them, but I preferred Superior Drummer though (I liked the drums given with the pack more). Its sounds needs less tweaking than BFD.

* Steven Slate Drums: The only Drum VSTi I haven't used (from the the top ones) is the SSD. I have to say that I need to try them and i have the feeling that they will be my favourite ones. Great sound and ready to mix!

Tips for a better sound

* So... The first thing to have a good sound is the source. In this case the drum.
* Choose the drum with the most pleasing sound to your ears then try tweaking. (you are the one to know what sound you need it depends on the mix)
* I mainly use the VST found in my daw. (my daw is Reaper). I often use compression, eq and reverb.

You can have a quick look here for Compression Settings:
http://mixingtips.org/crbst_18.html

And here for EQ settings:
http://mixingtips.org/crbst_20.html

I'll make a more detailed article about drums make some practice have a look at this information and I'll be back with more tips.

The article may take some time so feel free to ask whatever you want.

Be right back

Well, all of them have pro's and contra's Wink

-BFD is awesome, BUT cant really set the hi-hat's position within your DAW to get closed or open articulations unless u have a midi drumkit..

-S.Drummer with M.Foundry and other Toontrack expansions including Ezdrummer itself, become a large drum vsti with really good sounds, especially the room sounds are awesome! But, some of the cymbals sound fake, can't position/pan them separately (only within OH option), and compared to S.Slate, sound files are unprocessed and raw, it takes time to reprocess them to the taste, pain in the ass maybe, but a real experience to learn the stuff..

-Steven Slate is the best sounding drum vsti i've ever heard so far, unlike S.Drummer, sounds are processed and ready-to-go..Actually, i didn't get a chance to try it, but i've listened lots of demo's/songs which were made by this vsti, and they arr AWESOME!

Check the audiomidi.com btw, once there were a massive discount like 20$ for S.Slate, which i've noticed so lately and cried to miss that Neutral if it happens again, i'll be the first member to buy that Wink

Good to hear you're getting some use out of it J3FFR3Y, I like SSD's kicks and some snares but I use superior for everything else, the room mics in particular are seriously great quality. I think if you're recording real drums in a not so great sounding room that converting the drum hits (snare and kick at least, toms if possible) to midi with something like drumtracker and then using that midi to trigger superiors room mics only and then add those room tracks to your close mic'd real tracks could be a winner . It's something I plan on experimenting with as soon as I pick up a few more mics.

Superior Drummer and Steve Slate.

Still have Drum Kits From Hell knocking about somewhere. I have the metal foundry for SD but still use the Avatar pack, even for metal which isn't usually the norm. I love the Nir-Z snare!!
