Reverb

Reverb is a room simulator.

How many times you finished your mixing, but you felt that something missing?

You set the faders on the right place, compressed right, EQed right but it feels that the instruments can't match together.

Reverb my friends.
It's the aspect that makes your instruments sound like they're in a room.

There are a lot of experiments with Reverb.
For example, you can create a track and put a reverb there. With this you can:

* Edit the track(reverb) as you wish adding compressors, EQ and stuff, if needed.
* Save cpu power. You don't need to load the same reverb over and over.
* Ease on use / Flexibility. Just send the tracks that you want and adjust how much reverb you need with the send faders.

There are different types of reverb:

Hall - most common reverb simulates a big hall
Room - same as hall but smaller room
Plate - Similar to hall but sound is denser and flatter. Goes great with vocals or snare drum
Spring - similar to the sound of the reverb that we find on guitar amps
Reverse (inverse) - Sound of reverb running backwards


Reverb can flatter vocals, makes our snare drum more real and punchy, fix the dryness but it's so easy to overuse it.
And please don't, cause you'll ruin all the mix rather than improving it.

Less is more!

I agree with deafelectrician, and also you never want to bury any instrument in reverb unless its for something like an intro.

As a newbie to all this vast world of Mixing/mastering/audio engineering, i have to say that at least for me, Reverb is like my nemesis.

I've tried everything, from using sends to individual track inserts. Layering different types of reverbs. Well a lot of stuff i've read on the net really. And nothing seems to work for me, so i just never use it.

Maybe i need one of those "Reverb for dummies" book to read those nights when i can't sleep.

i dont know if this is proper protocol,but while with AE students or while my internship as an AE, i used time based effects in the "less is more" mindset.

EX: solo the track i am adding reverb/delay and adjust to where i had the sound i was going for,then put it in the mix and lower it until i could no longer hear it in the mix.

i rely heavily on my ear.

EX:guitar solo with "tons" of delay but you didnt know the delay was there until a break in the song.

Well it depends on what your adding reverb to...for example, You should never add TOO much reverb to your guitars because it dampens them and takes away some clearness. Adding a little reverb to your snare is a good idea, it thickens it sound and turns a thin snare to a nice full snare sound. Usually when you apply reverb, apply it while your whole mix is playing so that you can really hear when you added too much or when you added too little . Hope I helped.

sorry,i was more talking about guitars in my previous post.and thats how I feel about delay/reverb in my genre of playing.if i was doing country music,it would definately change my perspective on reverb.

reverb on a snare opens it up.
too much on a kick will sound flubbish in metal or sick in techno.

and i agree,the final product relies on how it sounds in the mix.the mix is IMO how you fine tune FX.
i start solo'd for sound im going for and do my final tweaks in the mix.
