Impulses...What are they?
Impulses are simply cabinet simulations. They emulate the Amp, Cab, and Mic position.
With Impulses, we get a really great sound for free. Some people use 1 impulse panned 100% to the left and the same impulse panned 100% to the right. Another way to use impulses is mixing them, for example you can have 2 different impulses on the left and 2 impulses on the right. We will be making a COMPLETELY FREE tone by using the second technique, mixing impulses.A Forum user named "myd" had asked about a metallica tone in another post(
http://www.forum-mixingtips.org/guitar-bass-f4/recording-through-guitar-amp-softwares-t71.htm) so I decided to create my own master of puppets tone for this Impulse FAQ.

Hopefully you guys already have some of these vst's, its kinda annoying having to download all this.
So add the vst's to your vst folder recognized by your DAW.
and place your impulses in a folder you can find easily.

STEP 1:
We'll Create three tracks we'll name them :
1) FX
2) Track 1
3) Track 2
Looks like this:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STEP 2:Now we'll add TSE 808, TSE X30,Kefir's Impulse Loader, and Bootsy's Nasty LF(in that exact order) in "
Track 1"
Impulse Used in Kefir is : 2off-pres5
look's like this:
Next turn the Mix knob on Kefir up to 100%. Right now our guitar tone sounds very dull. This is just the first part of making our guitar tone by mixing impulses. This impulse is to add sort of a low part to our guitar tone.
Now that we created the first half of our tone (the low part), in step 3 we will use a different impulse which will add the high gain part to add the second part to our guitar tone.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 3:We'll add TSE 808, TSE X30,Kefir's Impulse Loader, and Bootsy's Nasty HF(in that exact order) in "
Track 2"
Impulse used in Kefir is: Catharsis 2Looks like this:
Again, make sure the mix knob in Kefir is set to 100%.
Now if you arm both tracks and try out our tone so far we will have a low end from the first impulse + high gain from the 2nd impulse.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 4Our FX track will have Rea Gate, and Nasty CF (in that order) Looks like this:
DONT COPY MY THRESHOLD SETTINGS IN REAGATE Set it just so that there is no more hissing sound
In the FX chain there is some reverb added, you don't need reverb but I added it in just to make it sound better.
Either way I used Epic verb which is another FREE plugin from Bootsy's. You can get it here:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10891235/Impulse%20FAQ/epicVerb.dll---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So just as an overview of impulses. The first impulse adds the lower part of the tone, the second impulse adds the higher part of the tone. I added Bootsy's Nasty FX just to brighten up the tone.
There are many different types of impulse loaders like Kefir, SIR, Voxengo Boogex, Poulin Lecab. Whenever you use an impulse, set the mix to 100% in your impulse loader.
When you are mic'ing a cab(usually with a sm57 mic), you have to move the mic around and find the sweet spot where your guitar tone sounds really good. This is the good thing about impulses, you dont have to move any microphones around, they are like presets of different mic positions, all you have to do is experiment.
There are tons of impulses out there both commercial and free packs.
Some of the commercial impulses that are worth checking out are Recabinet and RedWire.
Some of other Free impulses worth checking out other than the pack we used here are GuitarHacks, Alu's impulses, and FearcomplexMusic's impulses.
Feedback and Criticism is always welcome as long as its constructive.
