Impulses...What are they?
Impulses are simply cabinet simulations. They emulate the Amp, Cab, and Mic position.
With Impulses, we get a really great sound for free. Some people use 1 impulse panned 100% to the left and the same impulse panned 100% to the right. Another way to use impulses is mixing them, for example you can have 2 different impulses on the left and 2 impulses on the right. We will be making a COMPLETELY FREE tone by using the second technique, mixing impulses.A Forum user named "myd" had asked about a metallica tone in another post(http://www.forum-mixingtips.org/guitar-bass-f4/recording-through-guitar-amp-softwares-t71.htm) so I decided to create my own master of puppets tone for this Impulse FAQ.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TONE DEMO:
Tone DEMO
Tone DEMO Mastered

What you need:
1) TSE 808----------------> http://www.theserinaexperiment.net/plugins/TSE_808v1.0.zip

2) TSE X30----------------> http://www.theserinaexperiment.net/plugins/TSE_X30v1.6.zip

3) Kefir -------------------> http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10891235/Impulse%20FAQ/keFIR_v1_2ch.dll

4) Catharsis Impulses------> http://catharsis.supremepixels.com/impulses/catharsis-awesometime-fredman.zip

5) Bootsy's Nasty vst pack-> Bootsy's Nasty Vst Pack

6)Rea Gate----------------> It's included in Reaper.

Hopefully you guys already have some of these vst's, its kinda annoying having to download all this.
So add the vst's to your vst folder recognized by your DAW.
and place your impulses in a folder you can find easily.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STEP 1:
We'll Create three tracks we'll name them :
1) FX
2) Track 1
3) Track 2

Looks like this:
-Impulse FAQ- Three%20Tracks%20Impulse

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STEP 2:

Now we'll add TSE 808, TSE X30,Kefir's Impulse Loader, and Bootsy's Nasty LF(in that exact order) in "Track 1"
Impulse Used in Kefir is : 2off-pres5
look's like this:

-Impulse FAQ- Track%201

Next turn the Mix knob on Kefir up to 100%. Right now our guitar tone sounds very dull. This is just the first part of making our guitar tone by mixing impulses. This impulse is to add sort of a low part to our guitar tone.
Now that we created the first half of our tone (the low part), in step 3 we will use a different impulse which will add the high gain part to add the second part to our guitar tone.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 3:
We'll add TSE 808, TSE X30,Kefir's Impulse Loader, and Bootsy's Nasty HF(in that exact order) in "Track 2"
Impulse used in Kefir is: Catharsis 2
Looks like this:
-Impulse FAQ- Track%202

Again, make sure the mix knob in Kefir is set to 100%.
Now if you arm both tracks and try out our tone so far we will have a low end from the first impulse + high gain from the 2nd impulse.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 4
Our FX track will have Rea Gate, and Nasty CF (in that order) Looks like this:
-Impulse FAQ- FX%20Track
DONT COPY MY THRESHOLD SETTINGS IN REAGATE Set it just so that there is no more hissing sound
In the FX chain there is some reverb added, you don't need reverb but I added it in just to make it sound better.
Either way I used Epic verb which is another FREE plugin from Bootsy's. You can get it here:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10891235/Impulse%20FAQ/epicVerb.dll
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So just as an overview of impulses. The first impulse adds the lower part of the tone, the second impulse adds the higher part of the tone. I added Bootsy's Nasty FX just to brighten up the tone.
There are many different types of impulse loaders like Kefir, SIR, Voxengo Boogex, Poulin Lecab. Whenever you use an impulse, set the mix to 100% in your impulse loader.

When you are mic'ing a cab(usually with a sm57 mic), you have to move the mic around and find the sweet spot where your guitar tone sounds really good. This is the good thing about impulses, you dont have to move any microphones around, they are like presets of different mic positions, all you have to do is experiment.

There are tons of impulses out there both commercial and free packs.
Some of the commercial impulses that are worth checking out are Recabinet and RedWire.
Some of other Free impulses worth checking out other than the pack we used here are GuitarHacks, Alu's impulses, and FearcomplexMusic's impulses.
Feedback and Criticism is always welcome as long as its constructive.

BGelais Metallica Gold Impulse Response Pack -Impulse FAQ- 694427

-Impulse FAQ- Exampleheadsettings

Dudes have some fun trying out BGelais Gold Impulse Response pack. All you need is a Guitar with humbuckers please!, a DI Box, and a DAW (like Fl Studio, Cubase, Reaper in fact any that support VST's!!!).

Basically yes it's never going to be like beautiful tube amps and 12 inch speakers!!! but, Bgelais has a version for each album and some specific songs. All the VST's are FREE amp sims woohoo and not only that all you need is the FREE amp sim head called Revolutionz 1.2 (we would like to thank the maker of this Ronald Passion his moto is "For the Love of sound").

To people that can use a DAW the chain is simply Guitar -> DI Box -> Revolutionz 1.2 amp head (settings can be found in his videos!) -> impulse Response Loader (keffir or FL Studio's Fruity Convolver new to 9.1 Fl Studio however please dont use Boogex it coolours the sound a little even with the 4 knobs turned down!)

And that's it simple chain all free plugins, thankyou so much the BGelais for all your hard work!!!!! These tones are very impressive given the correct guitar pick ups and also this is a blank canvas to you to use post eq's or whatever you need - obivously double tracking works a treat!!!. Bgelais also only really has 2 default template Amp head settings for Old Metallica and New Metallica the impulse reponse that you pick makes a BIG DIFFERENCE.

Anyway enough of my yabbering these are great tones to be able to use for free by everyone out there and use for practice sessions or just for fun - and tweak with the settings. It would be really damn cool if you lot could give it a go and post your recordings on here, even if it's just part of a riff or if you play Slipnot with the Metallica Load impulse (that's proberly not agood idea lol!!!!). But would be cool to see some videos of how the tone sucks or if it's OK. These are just free tones been made for you to use really easily and thanks to the people who created them!

Righty some linkies (remember BGelais is French Canadian, English is not his main language!):

the prelaunch of it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx7gQG2rcmg

the demo video of it (the youtube video is not doing full justice to the tones it can provide!):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sMvlvwy4fk

the download link for the Metallica Gold IR Impulse Pack:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvNxtCyY_ec&playnext=1&videos=UkhstMWfgFY&feature=mfu_in_order

this is has Cubase and FL Studio rough tutorial as to how to setup up the Amp heads and how to load the impulse response Smile
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUG-8QvxGYA&playnext=1&videos=-9aBN26gQ0c&feature=mfu_in_order

and a 2nd tutorial on the amp head settings:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mA55Nf9HUZI&playnext=1&videos=wdMAaZijPfg&feature=mfu_in_order

Now normal passive pickups are recommended here! BGelais has the Epiphone SG Special pickups which are just standard high bass less fizzy than my EMG's which are low bass high mid in fact exactly opposite to BGelais's Epiphone passives - I had a problem with EMG's Di sound where I had lots of high frequencies in the sound it is possible to do some things to actually fix this on the guitar input so if anyone has this problem with EMG 81 just message me and i can hopefully help you - this has confused me for the past 1 month and finally have an answer to it!)>

Lets see your guys do a Metallica riff using one of these tones 8-) and mostly have fun practicing !!!!

Yes it is included in the Metallica Gold Impulse Response pack, watch the Video in the link in blue it will tell you a link, and you can get the Metallica Gold IR Pack from there - it includes Keffir and the Revlutionz amp Head 1.2 and also BGelais wonderful Impulse Responses.

Watch this one and it will provide you with the link called the download link for the Metallica Gold IR Impulse Pack: it is in my post above. After you have it installed watch the 2 Tutorial Videos in the post above for recommended setup.

yeh man, i used to always use Boogex i like the way you can browse for impulses better than with keffir, however when I learnt that Boogex has a default eq on it, this changed my opinion. Keffir plays the impulse without colouring the sound which when using this metallica God Impulse Response pack from BGelais you should load it in an impulse loader that will not colour the sound.

if you have FL Studio 9.1 (9.1 and above have the Fruity Convolver) this would be the preffered method, great plugin Image-line have added since 9.1 and above, you can even make impulses using this as well Smile and if you have not got the Fruity Convolver then simply use Keffir, but remember to ALWAYS turn the "Mix Knob" to 100% and then lower the "Gain Knob" down a bit -25db to -10db is a good range if you want to fir the uitar within a Mix.

At the moment I have been playing using BGelais And Justice For All tone (metallica_shorteststraw_IR.wav), and holy crap it is very impressive! Perfect for practice sessions and practice recording sessions.
