How to create your own Sub-Drop (Bass Boom)

A couple of you guys were asking for those low bass boom samples. I'll show you how you can make your own sample, it's really easy to make AND you don't need anything else but Reaper to make it. You can make it in any DAW you'd like but I just wanted to show you guys how to do it using only the plugins included with Reaper so that you don't have to be downloading a bunch of vst's just to make one sample.

There are a couple of things you need to keep in mind when making or using a Sub-Drop,


So let's start
~Open up Reaper and make a new track

~In the FX list, under the "JS" plugins (included with Reaper), search for "Tone Generator".


~Set the dry mix all the way down. The base frequency can be anywhere from 40 to 70 Hz. In the sample I created and posted above I used 63Hz. If you want your sub drop to be even better the note should be set to whatever note your bass guitar is playing at the time the Sub-Drop starts(If your not using a bass guitar, simply set it to whatever note the guitar is playing when the Sub-Drop comes in). The sample I posted in my recording above, I set the note as A. Make sure the shape is set to "sine".


~Next set your track to record its output instead of the input. How Do I Do This? click on the button that says "in", then from the pop up menu select "Record: output", then select "Record: output (stereo)"


~Arm your track to record and record as long as you want your Sub-Drop to be. Then click stop.


~Now that you recorded your Sub-Drop, we can go ahead and remove the "tone generator" from our FX chain.

Now to process our Sub Drop

~Sub drops can either have a "mid-speed" attack or a fast attack. IMO, it is not a sub drop unless it has a fast attack, but it's up to you. It also has to fade out slowly, AND it can't be TOO loud.

~So we want our sample to fade out, to do this, pull the fader at the end of your sample inwards


~Next select, FX> Cockos> ReaPitch. We'll automate our sample so that it's pitch can decrease slowly. So on your track click on the "env" button. From the pop up menu mark an X by clicking on "Shift (full range)"


~Hold shift and click around the area shown in the picture to make a point.


~Set your point's up to look like something similar to this:


~For some EQ, add a Low-Pass @120 Hz.

~Export your sample and...
