PostSubject: Seperating MIDI notes/drum hits in tracks   Seperating MIDI notes/drum hits in tracks Icon_minitimeTue Oct 19, 2010 8:45 pm

Ok, so I have no idea what im doing with MIDI, so I may be hard to deal with here but here goes anyway.

The situation im in, is a fairly simple one really. I have a MIDI drum track that someone sent me, and would like me to use samples on the track to see how it would sound in a mix.
The problem I have is, how do i seperate each part of the MIDI track out so that I can use Drumagog on each part of the MIDI track to get it to change each of the sounds? Is there a way that i can do this without having to just copy and paste every single MIDI track into a new seperate file and then stick the plugin on, or can I route it to certain tracks automatically?

Im using cubase at the moment to do this, as I dont have any other software that I can use.

Any help would be much appreciated here.

you create a track and add your favourite VSTi drum machine. In this example we will use Addictive Drums.
So:

1) Create a track and add Addictive Drums. In the same track add your midi file.
2) Press "Play". If the hits are correct leave it as it is. If not, Drag the notes to the desired one. If C1 is the kick drum and your midi file is at A2 for example, just drag all the notes that are in A2 to C1.
3) send your Addictive Drums mixer to your DAW mixer. Addictive Drums (and most of the drum software) has a mixer in it. But you want to use your DAW's mixer not the mixer of your addictive drums. Why? Cause that way you can process drums seperetaly and more easily. And of course makes it easy to mix your drums with your other instruments etc.
4) Now that you send each drum to a specific track, it's time to add drumagog!

it's easier than it seems
Hope I helped :yeah:

And the nooby MIDI user loses again Sad. If only i knew it was simple like with another plugin I would've tried it.

The solution I came to at the end was actually a nice compromise and worked perfectly.

1. Create the MIDI track.
2. Create new FX channel tracks for each kit.
3. Add Drumagog to each of these tracks, select the MIDI channel and note for the individual parts.
4. Disolve the MIDI track to seperate tracks then link each one of those to each FX tracks.

Worked out in the end but took ******** ages to actually do. I kinda wished I had read up about MIDI a LONG time ago. Never really felt the need to as it tended to be live instruments I recorded. Ahh well, you live and learn ae?

PS Sender and any others. I've heard Reaper is a nice piece of software, but after using Pro-tools and Cubase for years i've been scared to try anything else. Is it actually any good?

i've stopped using cubase for reaper. Very Happy well everything is a little complicated at the start but after some days with reaper you may know more with this rathen than with cubase hehe.

i suggest you try it

I think I might! Nothing can replace Pro-tools for me, simply for the reason I created this topic....I dont care about MIDI haha. A studio I work in currently has Pro-tools 8 so sadly I need to keep on top of this, but for my own studio...Reaper seems very appealing. I'll maybe give it a little try for any mixing sessions that I next do. Thanks again Very Happy
